Gettin' Green

A friend told us about this new slow feeder called the "Green". Rat Terrier's are notorious garbage guts and typically devour their food in a matter of seconds. This "bowl" not only slows them down, it takes some thought and maneuvering to work the food towards the edge with their tongue to make it easier for a small dog to eat. The Green feeder works with both wet or dry food and is dishwasher safe. The way that it's molded there's a bit of a lip around the edge so it can even hold liquids without leaking on your floor. With a cost of between $40 and $45 it's a bit pricey but in a sense you are getting both a food bowl and a food toy so it's not too horrible of a price.

Langley tried it first with some of his daily kibble. All of Langley's kibble is fed in either puzzle type feeder toys or as reinforcers so this was a new puzzle to add to his repertoire. He loved it and because it's pretty sturdy and he has gotten used to eating in toys he took right to it.

After Langley had his turn I decided to let Frodo eat his raw food in it and see how that worked. Frodo prefers to get his food the easiest way possible so in the video you see him take off when I release him to try the toy. That's because he wanted to find his bowl which would be quicker. No such luck. Typically your best bet would be to feed wet or raw food on tile since the food can get flicked out of the puzzle sometimes. The light is better in our living room though and we were planning on cleaning the carpet the next day anyhow.

As you can see, even a 10 pound dog like Frodo can easily eat from this toy and it turned his typical 20 second snarfing of a meal into a 5 minute challenge that kept him moving the entire time.

So our rat terriers give this feeder 2 paws up. Highly recommended for any dog, big or small. Even a smush faced dog can use their tongue to work the food to the outer edges where they could eat it.
